our values:the 8 limbs
         of hamaara yoga

inclusivity

We serve all bodies, not just the bendy ones.

  • No Gatekeeping.

    • Anyone who aligns with our values and wants to practice with us is welcome, regardless of body type or level of experience.

    • No fancy pants required! This is a judgment-free zone where you are welcome to come as you are.

  • Intentionally Inclusive Teaching.

    • Our sequencing, cueing, and use of props are all intentionally designed to make the practice work for all bodies, not just the naturally bendy ones.

    • We always use English! We may use Sanskrit from time to time, but we always use English no matter what. That way no one feels left out or confused about what’s going on.

  • Secular Approach.

    • Our approach is based on the teachings of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras and is therefore completely secular. There are no references to any specific religion in the Sutras. (Nope, not even Hinduism!) It’s a physical + spiritual practice that goes hand in hand with all faiths and belief systems, and that’s how we teach it!

yoga as a way of life.
not a workout.

With yourself and your community.

  • Connection with Yourself

    • This practice will give you a greater understanding and awareness of your body, mind, and soul.

    • We’ll teach you to understand the messages your body is sending you and to respond to them in a way that honors your ever-changing needs, moods, and energy levels.

  • Connection with Community

    • The power of this practice is amplified exponentially when we practice together in community. Shared breath, shared space, shared laughs, shared experiences - this is the kind of connection that we thrive on as humans.

    • If you’re craving the opportunity to connect with like minded individuals, our community is the place for you!

No gurus and no show-offs.

  • We believe that no matter how much we learn, there’s always room for more: we are all always students. Even our teachers. (Especially our teachers.)

  • We do not believe in gurus. Instead, we encourage you to connect with + follow your own inner teacher.

  • We celebrate our own and each other's growth; but we never show off.

  • We set our ego aside when we’re on the mat. Being advanced isn’t about fancy poses or competing with anyone, especially yourself. It’s about having the strength of character to set your ego aside, connecting with your inner teacher, and making the choices that will serve you best in the moment - no matter what's happening on the mat next to you, and no matter what happened the last time you came to the mat.

For ourselves, each other, and the roots of this practice.

  • For the roots of this practice.

    • This is a modern take on yoga, but we don’t forget where it came from. We believe in honoring the roots of the practice while also adapting it to suit modern day life and needs.

    • Sanskrit is the original language of the Sutras. While we don’t use it often (see Inclusivity!), on the rare occasions that we do use it, we make sure to pronounce it correctly.

    • Closing our classes by saying Namaste is how we honor the Hindu roots of yoga. While the Yoga Sutras are not themselves a Hindu religious text, the practice of yoga absolutely has its origins in Hindu tradition.

  • For each other.

    • We are mindful of our fellow yogis and our teachers when we practice in community. (And we carry that respect for others off the mat with us into the other areas of our lives.)

    • We make sure we’re not stinky when we practice together.

    • We put away our devices and anything else that might disrupt our own or others’ practice.

    • We keep our voices low and calm - no harshing anyone’s zen!

    • We refrain from potentially disturbing or triggering topics of conversation. You never know what someone else is going through, and the studio is meant to be a safe space for all to come and heal from the stresses of life.

    •  We stick to the sequence being taught. Variations, prop-tions, and breaks are always welcome. But choosing a completely different pose or sequence from what everyone else is doing is distracting to both the teacher and your fellow students.

  • For ourselves.

    • Every day is different in our bodies, and on our mats. Rather than pushing yourself, we teach you to acknowledge and honor your changing needs. Some days a fiery spicy flow may be what you’re itching for. But other days, a soothing Yin or Relaxed Flow will be just the ticket.

    • Aging is inevitable, and we welcome it with grace. Our practice empowers you to observe and honor your body’s natural changes as they occur.

We teach you to connect with, trust, + follow your inner teacher.

  • We empower you to understand how to modify the practice to suit your unique needs while still maintaining the intention of each pose, rather than contorting yourself into someone else’s version of the practice.

  • We believe that props are one of the best ways for you to customize your practice to exactly what you want and need. They are not viewed as a crutch, but rather as a sign that a student truly knows their practice!

  • We teach our students not to worry about how a pose looks (because it looks different in every body), but rather to learn how it's supposed to feel. That's why we don't have mirrors ina our practice space.

  • You don’t need fancy tech or expensive supplements or over-engineered food or any of the other stuff the wellness industry is constantly trying to sell you to feel good. You have within you the power to change how you feel - you just need to understand how to harness that power. We teach you how to tap into your natural power to make yourself feel great without any unnecessary stuff.

Old + new, slow + fast, soft + strong, east + west.

  • We teach ancient Eastern wisdom in a way that makes sense for modern Western life.

  • We value rest + slowing down just as much as building strength + flexibility.

  • We reject Hustle Culture’s obsession with extremes, and instead teach + encourage a lifestyle of sustainable balance.

This is yoga for real life. A practice designed to help you feel your best every day, and equip you with tools to deal with life's daily challenges.

  • We interpret and teach the Sutras in a way that you can actually use in your everyday life, off the mat and on.

  • Whether you're struggling with a stiff body, an overloaded mind, or an aching heart, our holistic approach to the yoga practice will always leave you feeling better.

  • You won't find any crystals or chakras or energy work at our studio. Instead, we focus on down-to-earth, real-life applications of yoga philosophy and science-based physical anatomy. If that other stuff is your jam, we totally respect that. It's just not what we offer here!

Our teachings are based on Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, which teach us that yoga is a way of life, not a workout.

  • Hamaara Yoga teaches all 8 limbs of the yoga practice, not just the poses. We teach you how to take your practice off the mat and into your everyday life, using all of the tools it offers to cultivate a life of peace and calm.

  • If you want a yoga-inspired workout, there are plenty of other studios that offer that. But if you want to harness the full and true power of this practice, you’ve gotta do all of it, and you can’t amp it up to a workout, because that destroys the calming benefits. So choose your type of yoga with intention.

  • This practice WILL change your life. But you have to do it all.
